Whether it is a USB C port or a window weep hole the physics of debris and functionality remain identical. When a homeowner asks how to tell if your phone charging port is dirty they are usually experiencing a failure of connection. In my world a failure of connection happens when a window sash no longer seals against the weatherstrip because of accumulated grit or when water cannot escape the frame. A dirty port on a phone prevents a charge. A dirty port on a window specifically the weep hole leads to structural rot and mold. A homeowner called me in a panic because their new windows were sweating. This is a classic case of what I call the Condensation Crisis. I walked into their living room with my hygrometer in hand and the digital readout climbed to sixty percent humidity immediately. The windows were not the problem. The windows were doing their job by being the coldest surface in the room. I had to explain that their lifestyle which involved a lot of indoor plants and a lack of proper ventilation was the culprit. It was not a manufacturing defect but a failure of the home ecosystem. We also ensured the Low E coating was on Surface 3. By placing the coating there we reflect the long wave infrared radiation back into the house where it belongs during a freezing January. If we were in the south we would put it on Surface 2 to reject the heat before it even enters the glass package.
When we talk about mobile service and chip repair in the glazing industry we are often referring to the immediate stabilization of an architectural glass unit. A chip in a window is a localized stress concentrator. If you do not address it the thermal expansion and contraction cycles will eventually turn that chip into a full plate crack. This is why same day service is vital. A glass installer must understand that glass is a liquid that forgot how to flow. It is brittle and unforgiving. When we perform a chip repair we are essentially injecting a resin that has a similar refractive index to the glass itself which restores the structural integrity and prevents the crack from migrating. This is the same level of precision required when you are cleaning out a charging port with a non conductive probe. One wrong move and you bend a pin. One wrong move on a window and you blow the vacuum seal of the Insulated Glass Unit or IGU.

The installation autopsy reveals the truth every time. I have seen countless windows where the installer relied on a bead of cheap caulk and a prayer. This is the caulk and walk method and it is the bane of my existence. A proper installation starts with the rough opening. We need to ensure the opening is plumb level and square within an eighth of an inch. We then install a sill pan. The sill pan is the last line of defense. It is a flashed sloped surface that directs any water that gets past the primary seal back to the exterior. If your glass installer is not talking about the shingle principle where every layer of flashing tape overlaps the one below it then they are setting you up for failure. We use high grade butyl flashing tape because it remains flexible in sub zero temperatures unlike bitumen based tapes that can become brittle and crack. We shim the window at the setting blocks to ensure the weight of the glass is distributed properly. If the shims are placed incorrectly the frame will bow and the sash will not operate. This causes the weatherstripping to gap and suddenly you have a draft that feels like an open door.
Let us talk about the frame material science. Many people go for vinyl because it is budget friendly. But vinyl has a high coefficient of thermal expansion. In a climate with sixty degree temperature swings the vinyl is moving constantly. This can stress the glazing bead and eventually lead to a seal failure. Fiberglass is much more stable because it is made of pultruded glass fibers and resins. It expands and contracts at almost the same rate as the glass itself which maintains the integrity of the seals for decades. Then you have wood which is beautiful but high maintenance. If you do not stay on top of the paint or stain the wood will absorb moisture and swell. This is exactly like a dirty charging port. Once the material is compromised the connection is lost. In windows the connection is the thermal break between the interior and exterior environments. We want to stop the heat from jumping across the frame. That is why we use warm edge spacers like those made of stainless steel or structural foam instead of the old fashioned aluminum spacers that acted like a highway for heat loss.
If you are trying to determine if your system is failing look at the corners of your glass. If you see fogging between the panes the seal is gone. The desiccant inside the spacer has reached its saturation point and can no longer absorb the moisture. At that point the window has lost its R value and is basically a glorified single pane of glass. This is the time to call a professional glass installer. Do not wait for the rot to reach the studs.
