It wasn’t the windows: it was their lifestyle: too many plants, long showers, and a broken vent fan. But that moisture is more than just a nuisance. In a cold climate, that condensation can freeze in the glazing bead, expanding and actually pushing the glass away from the seal. This is when you start to hear that whistling sound or see the glass vibrate in high winds. If your glass is shaking, your seal has likely failed, or your glazing bead has lost its grip. The Science of the Chip: Why Same-Day Repair is Mandatory
Let’s talk about the ‘shaking’ in terms of chip repair. When a piece of glass is chipped, the structural integrity of the entire lite is compromised. In the glazing industry, we call this a ‘fret.’ In a mobile service context, we use a specialized resin that has the same refractive index as the glass itself, usually around 1.52. If you don’t get that chip filled immediately, moisture enters the crack. In a northern winter, that moisture undergoes a freeze-thaw cycle. Water expands by about 9 percent when it freezes. That expansion acts like a wedge, driven by the cold, forcing the crack to propagate across the entire surface. The ‘shaking’ you see is the light bouncing off the internal surfaces of that spreading fracture. A mobile service technician doesn’t just ‘fix’ the look: they inject a polymer that restores the tension across the Rough Opening of the crack, effectively welding the glass back together at a molecular level.
Thermal Stress and U-Factor in Cold Climates
In regions where the mercury stays below freezing for months, the U-Factor is the most important number on your NFRC label. While the South worries about Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC), we are fighting a war against heat loss. A low U-Factor means the glass is doing its job of keeping the heat inside. We achieve this through Low-E coatings on Surface #3 (the interior-facing surface of the outboard lite). This reflects the long-wave infrared radiation (your furnace’s heat) back into the room. If your glass is vibrating because of a poor fit in the sash, you are losing that thermal benefit. A loose glass pane allows for convective currents to form between the glass and the stop, essentially bypassing the insulating power of the Argon gas fill.

The Anatomy of a Failure: The Installation Autopsy
When I perform an autopsy on a window that is ‘shaking’ or leaking, the culprit is almost always the same: a lack of a proper Sill Pan or a failure to use shims correctly. A window should never sit directly on the rough sill. It needs to be leveled with shims so that the frame can expand and contract without putting pressure on the glass. If the installer ‘caulked and walked,’ they likely skipped the flashing tape and the drip cap. Without a drip cap, water runs down the header and directly into the sash. Over time, this rots the wood or corrodes the metal spacers in an IGU (Insulated Glass Unit). Once those spacers fail, the Argon gas escapes, and you get that tell-tale fogging and vibration. A mobile service for glass repair can sometimes save a unit by replacing the IGU, but if the frame is rotted because of poor water management, you are looking at a full-frame tear-out.
